In the Feb edition of Model Helicopter World the editor comments on multi rotors and the speed etc. at which they are taking over rotary flight in this country.
Can I please draw you attention to the point made in the article that tighter restrictions are now being imposed on multirotor flight and in particular where its used for filming.
Of course you as pilot have to satisfy yourself that you and the aircraft (quad or multi) are both fit and capable to fly and conduct yourself safely.
However the restrictions on "Small Unmanned Surveillance Aircraft) are that unless you have specific permission from the CAA you cannot legally fly:
1. At a height of more then 400ft
2.Over or within 150m a congested area
3 Over or within 150m of an organised open air assembly of more then 1000 persons
4. Within 50m of any vessel, vehicle or structure that is not under the control of the person in charge of the aircraft.
5. Within 50m or any person.
For further clarification and more details refer to the CAA website or even the BMFA.

Be safe and sensible out there guys!

Hi Bill . I think a lot of the problems with quads are caused by A . Their popularity at the moment due to Maplins and their like  advertising ready to fly jobs at very affordable prices  . B The apparent ease of flying them compared to a model helicopter and using a mobile phone to control them .C Their ability to fly unobtrusively while snooping with a camera and D Being bought and flown by idiots who have no idea of what they are doing, possibly the same idiot you see driving while using his/her mobile phone . We all know how addictive people can be to mobile phones . >:o Help ,I'm starting to rant Help !00ps

I agree with everything Phil said.

The danger is the technology has become so good, complete novices are flying straight out of the box.

Because they (the models) fly well so well. With little (or no) experience, skill, or expertise (and minimal imput).

Joe public has been let loose with no understanding of the 'rules' and variable degrees of common sense, with what they regard as a mere gadget toy.

I've seen them flying over Reculver beach. Also over Margate beach last summer (it was a packed summer beach).

In my opinion its a just a matter of time until the inevitable plonker loses control of one.

Imagine the media frenzy headlines (even if no one is actually hurt) .
And imagine the paparazzi with one, using it for intrusive pictures/video they could not otherwise get!
All a question of time . Who they gonna blame?
us of course !

You have kinda answered your own question Bill.Where there is a will there will always be a way for criminals of every type use equipment for the bad in our world.lets face it even the doodlebug was an extension of the model airplane.
The last thing to consider is that our airplanes and helicopters require a fairly big degree of financial investment from the outset AND time and a place to learn how to fly the said aircraft.Quads/drones or multicopters can be flown to some degree of competence by anyone with Basic skills due to the onboard technology with the inception if gyros, Gps and stabilising units all onboard and having the ability to hover utonimously means pilots have a chance to rectify their errors as opposed to us fixed or rotory wing pilots.
Now when we consider expert like Dave Leigh he has the skills to fly very competantly, safely and enjoys the hobby/sport for what it is. You do not need to be a conscientious as Dave or as good to be able to get the multirotor from A-B. And with virtual routeplanning as well now you probably dont even need to leave your settee.
